Restaurant Freienhof is the oldest restaurant in the town of Thun and a convivial meeting place for Thun’s residents and clubs. With a history dating back to the 12th century, the Restaurant Freienhof combines history and culinary excellence in a picturesque setting. The renowned interior designers from Ushi Tamborriello have designed the rooms of the Freienhof. As in the neighbouring Hotel Aare Thun, a luxurious ship inspires the interior design.
History
Tradition and modernity
The Freienhof restaurant has served as a historical hub in Thun since 1308 and is still a popular meeting place for locals and guests from all over the world. The name Freienhof is derived from a right of freedom that was already known in Germanic times. It is an old right of asylum protection, according to which delinquents such as murderers, heretics or witches found protection from arbitrary seizure or the “mob” in the so-called Freistatt until tempers calmed down, and a final judgement could be passed on them.
